Gary Neville had better win rate at Valencia than Steven Gerrard did at Aston Villa

Steven Gerrard left Aston Villa with an even worse win rate than Gary Neville‘s at Valencia.

Gerrard, who was sacked by Villa following their 3-0 defeat to Fulham on Thursday (October 20), won just 13 of the 40 matches he took charge of, drawing eight and losing the other 19.

The final blow at Craven Cottage meant he ended with a win rate of 32.5%, which looks bad enough alone before you compare it to Neville’s. The now Sky Sports pundit’s reign at La Liga side Valencia was infamously one of the worst attempts at management from a former player.

It was so bad, in fact, that he scrapped his coaching career altogether and went back to punditry full-time. But even the Manchester United legend was better than Liverpool icon Gerrard at Villa.

Neville won 10 of his 28 matches, drawing seven and losing 11, resulting in a win rate of 35.7%. Having been appointed in December 2015, he lasted less than four months in the job before his sacking in March 2016.

In contrast, Gerrard was given 11 months to make it work at Villa Park. But after their 14th placed finish in the Premier League last season, he wasn’t able to improve on that at the start of this campaign.

Villa find themselves dangling above the relegation zone in 17th in the table with nine points from their first 11 games. Home wins against Everton and Southampton, as well as draws with Manchester City, Leeds and Nottingham Forest, have been their only source of points.

Gerrard’s win rate makes even more grim reading if you remove his two domestic cup games, of which he won one versus Bolton and lost the other to Manchester United. The 12 league victories in 38 games comes out at just 31.6% instead.
