Porto defender David Carmo has been ridiculed by cruel supporters online following his “dumb” challenge in the Champions League.
With the ball 30 yards away, and the Portuguese side in no danger, Carmo saw fit to needlessly lash out at Club Brugge centre-back Bruno Mechele when defending a corner and the blatant foul was spotted by VAR official Chris Kavanagh.
After instructing on-field referee Michael Oliver to observe the incident via the monitor, the Englishman immediately pointed to the spot with Carmo picking up a yellow card for the ridiculous off-the-ball incident, which has been ridiculed by fans on social media.

“David Carmo might actually be a fraud. That’s the most ridiculous way of giving away a penalty lol,” slammed one supporter.
“As bad as David Carmo has been at Porto, that was easily the dumbest thing he has done since arriving from Braga. Completely reckless and unnecessary. Gives away a penalty and misses the next match,” blasted a second.

“There are so many people here who don’t understand that a childish mistake like that changed the whole game and could cost the qualification,” added a third.
“This is just so incredibly stupid by David Carmo,” criticised a fourth. “How barbaric of David Carmo, unbelievable,” stated a fifth.
However, one fan was quick to praise the heroics of Porto goalkeeper Diogo Costa, who twice denied Brugge from 12-yards: “It’s convenient to be a Porto defender. If you’re overwhelmed, just mow down the opposing striker and Diogo Costa takes care of stopping the penalty behind.”
Already denying Bayer Leverkusen in both group stage matches, Costa once again was not to be beaten from the spot when Hans Vanaken lined up to shoot. However, Brugge were re-awarded the penalty following a VAR intervention, as Costa was deemed to have left his line too early.
Dutch international Noa Lang then called rank at the second attempt but he still couldn’t find a way past Costa, who sprang to his left-hand side to make the save.
