BREAKING Mum and boyfriend who beat son with extension cable and bed slat jailed for life

A mum and her partner who tortured and killed her 15-year-old son have been jailed for life and will face a minimum term of 39 years each.

Mum Agnieszka Kalinowska and boyfriend Andrzej Latoszewski, subjected her teenage son, Sebastian Kalinowski, to a campaign of horrific abuse.

This included beating him with the slat from a bed, stabbing him with a needle, and whipping him with an extension cable as well as punching and kicking him.

Sebastian died at his home in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire, of an infection as a result of “untreated complications of multiple rib fractures” in August 2021.

Mrs Justice Lambert said during sentencing: “You, Latoszewski, are a bully.

“Like all bullies, you sought to intimidate and frighten Sebastian, who was weaker than you.

“In Sebastian you found an easy prey.

“There were times when viewing the footage I was sure you had lost awareness of the fact that you were hitting a human being and not a punching bag.”

Turning to the boy’s mother, the judge said: “As for you, Kalinowska, the explanation is simple, you just didn’t care about Sebastian. You were only interested in yourself.”

Kalinowska, 35 and Latoszewski, 38 had previously denied murdering Sebastian.

However, a jury at Leeds Crown Court found them in July after viewing “horrifying” CCTV footage that showed several incidents in which Sebastian was repeatedly punched and kicked.

The pair even stamped on him and used household items including an extension cable to beat and whip the youngster.

Prosecutor Jason Pitter QC had previously told the court that the teenager suffered “weeks, if not months of terrible, cruel, systematic assaults and ill-treatment, neglect and abuse”.

Sebastian had moved from his native Poland, where he had been living with his dad, to England less than a year before the barrage of abuse began.

His mum and step-dad claimed he deserved punishment for lying and playing truant from the school he attended, North Huddersfield Trust, where he had been described as a “model pupil”, the court heard.

The jury also learned that Kalinowska accepted a marriage proposal from Latoszewski while in prison and that Sebastian’s mother had also written a “very long letter” to her partner in which there was no mention of her little boy.
