England have named their squad number for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar – one week before their opening clash with Iran.
Gareth Southgate named his 26-man squad last Thursday, and among the usual suspects, James Maddison earned his first England call-up since 2019. There was also space for Trent Alexander-Arnold and Marcus Rashford, who have been dropped in recent squads.
Manchester City’s Kalvin Phillips also made the cut, after just coming back from injury days before the final announcement. While Callum Wilson was given the nod ahead of Brentford’s Ivan Toney – who showed Southgate what he was missing against City.

Harry Kane will keep his usual No.9 shirt as he looks to win a second Golden Boot – after also claiming the accolade in Russia.
While Raheem Sterling will wear the famous No.10 and Jack Grealish took the No.7 shirt – despite wearing No.10 for Manchester City. There are no surprises in the goalkeeping department, and Jordan Pickford has claimed the No.1 shirt for a third straight tournament.
Alexander-Arnold, who worked his way back into the England fold has elected for No.19.

England will open their World Cup campaign on 21 November when they take on Iran at the Khalifa International Stadium, Doha.
The Three Lions then face two tricky clashes with the USA on 25 November and Wales on 29 November. England are expected to top the group, but all three games could prove to be banana slips for Southgate and his men.
The Three Lions arrived at St Georges’ Park on Monday, where they met with Southgate for the first time ahead of the footballing showpiece.
