Conor McGregor opens door to Khabib Nurmagomedov rematch with jibe about Russian’s father

Conor McGregor has called out Khabib Nurmagomedov for a rematch after the Russian star took aim at his former UFC rival.

Retired Nurmagomedov choked McGregor out in their grudge clash in the cage in 2018, as their feud was ended in conclusive fashion.

And Irish star McGregor was not able to seek revenge after undefeated Nurmagomedov retired two years ago.

The Notorious has not fought since breaking his leg in his trilogy fight with Dustin Poirier 16 months ago and has last victory in the cage came in January 2020.

McGregor’s UFC return date is unclear, but he has now offered Nurmagomedov to come out of retirement after taking exception to the Russian’s dig towards him.

Nurmagomedov, who is now a successful coach, stated when discussing his fighters Islam Makhachev, UFC lightweight champion and his cousin Usman, the Bellator lightweight champ: “I hear long time ago when one guy was talking about, ‘We’re here to take over.’ But we here to take over.”

The 29-0 MMA star was referring to McGregor’s famous comments in 2014, when he claimed his Irish contingent were ‘here to take over’ after his victory over Diego Brandao.

Khabin went on to hail his father for the sacrifices he made and the way he taught and pushed him as a youngster, with his legacy living on in the sport.

But McGregor quickly fired back at Nurmagomedov, stating that his father’s plan for him ‘is never complete’ and suggesting that he is a quitter for an early retirement.

“I fight on! Your fathers plan is never complete because you quit and ran, brother,” McGregor tweeted.

“God bless. I’m still here if you want to go again. But your fear of defeat means you’ve already lost. Run from it all you want. We all lose in the end. Death takes us all. I fear nothing but God.”

Nurmagomedov’s use of McGregor’s iconic quote to refer to the success of his new stable of fighters has clearly riled the former two-weight world champion.

But it still appears unlikely that Nurmagomedov would turn his back on his coaching career to step back into the cage against his old rival McGregor.
