Gary Lineker explains why Harry Maguire was subbed off during England World Cup win

Gary Lineker has offered an update on the condition of Harry Maguire after he suffered from blurred vision during England’s win over Iran.

Gareth Southgate’s Three Lions cruised to a 6-2 victory despite a brace from Mehdi Taremi but Maguire couldn’t last the 90 having called to be subbed after 70 minutes for Eric Dier.

Having spoken to the medical team before going off, Lineker said on BBC Sport at full-time: “Harry Maguire was struggling at that time and apparently he had blurred vision, nothing too serious, he’s okay, we’re led to believe.

Having gone off with the score at 4-1, Maguire’s overall performance was praised after critics had argued he shouldn’t be in the squad.

Maguire was picked despite being dropped at Manchester United in a show of faith from Southgate, who relied upon him at the 2018 World Cup and Euro 2020.

England cruised into a half-time lead at the Khalifa International Stadium thanks to Jude Bellingham’s header and fine goals from Bukayo Saka and Raheem Sterling.

Saka then got his second before Marcus Rashford made it five and Jack Grealish got the sixth.

Southgate wasn’t completely joyous in his post-match press conference thanks to the controversial awarding of a late penalty.
