Darts drama as daring seagull invades arena while stars including MVG are playing

Darts fans were left bemused this morning when a seagull invade the venue of the Players Championship Finals sparking fears that play would be delayed.

Michael van Gerwen will aim to win a seventh Players Championship crown tonight and the invading seagull almost had the best view in the house when sat high up in the Butlins Minehead Resort.

Dutch journalist Pieter Verbeek tweeted a picture of the seagull with the comment: “High visitors on the last day of the Players Championship Finals. Literally then… #seagull #minehead” One fan said that organisers were finding it hard to get the seagull out of the venue.

They added: “Drama in Minehead this morning, as a seagull has got into the venue and nobody knows how to get it out. Big day for the seagull, who’s making his tv debut… and on the final day of a major tournament, no less. Straight in at the deep end.”

Another fan had an idea of how darts stars could help get action underway. They added: “Is the darts really going to be delayed because of a seagull. If only there was someone about who could accurately throw a tranquiliser.”

When action eventually got underway this afternoon MVG survived a late fightback from Danny Noppert to take a 10-7 victory in his quarter-final match – finishing the match with a 12-dart finish. MVG faces Luke Humphries in the semi-final with the final also taking place tonight.

Mighty Mike will be looking for revenge after suffering a heavy defeat by Humphries at the German Darts Grand Prix who also knocked him out of the Grand Slam of Darts.

Ahead of his quarter-final MVG told Sky Sports: “I know what I’m capable of. I know I can do a lot more and that’s what I believe in. I haven’t won anything yet.” In the other semi-final Jonny Clayton meets Rob Cross with both players winning their quarter-final matches 10-3 earlier today.
