Brazil manager Phil Scolari banned players from having ‘acrobatic sex’ before matches

Former Brazil manager Luiz Felipe Scolari banned his players from having “acrobatic sex” before World Cup matches.

The 74-year-old was reappointed as head coach ahead of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, having led the South American nation to their fifth triumph in 2002. He famously imposed a sex ban on his players during the tournament in South Korea and Japan, where they went unbeaten.

How much of their success was down to that – or the sheer quality of Rivaldo, Ronaldo and Ronaldinho up front – can be debated. But as a man unlikely to be swayed away from his principles, Scolari ensured Neymar and co. stuck to his tried and tested regime on home soil.

His 2014 squad were able to evade a full sex ban as Scolari only outlawed some of the more extravagant positions. “The players can have normal sex during the World Cup. Usually normal sex is done in balanced way,” Big Phil said before the competition.

He went on to say: “But there are certain forms, certain ways and others who do acrobatics. We will put limits and survey the players.”

Yet Brazil’s stars may have lost focus and engaged in some shenanigans as the Selecao – without Neymar and captain Thiago Silva – went on to suffer a catastrophic 7-1 defeat to Germany in front of their own fans.

It marked a historically embarrassing moment for the football-mad nation and a far cry from the level of success Scolari’s side managed in 2002, having been ordered to abstain from 40 days prior to the competition.

Brazilian legend Ronaldo sensationally revealed in 2006: “The manager would tell us that any player who cannot control his penis is not a man, but an irrational animal.

“The World Cup in 2002 was a wonderful memory but I will always remember the ache down below just as much as lifting the trophy.”
