Shawn Michaels says New Day are ‘open to conversations’ on longer-term stay in WWE NXT

NXT chief Shawn Michaels has admitted he’s hoping to pin The New Day down for a longer spell with the brand as the legendary WWE team feature at Deadline this weekend.

Xavier Woods and Kofi Kingston, two thirds of the iconic New Day trio along with Big E, battle Brits Pretty Deadly at NXT’s Deadline event this Saturday (December 10).

It represents something of a coup for Michaels, the Senior Vice President of Talent Development Creative for WWE and essentially the head of NXT.

Deadline sees them go up against dastardly British pairing Pretty Deadly for the NXT Tag Team Championship after the relative veterans showed up on NXT television this past Tuesday to lay down a challenge.

Speaking to Daily Star as part of a media conference for the weekend spectacle, 57-year-old admitted he hopes it will ‘certainly more’ than a one-off appearance for the popular pairing on the brand.

Michaels, himself one of WWE’s most decorated stars of all time, says he’s already approached Woods and Kingston about making that stay more long-term.

Explaining the process of having main roster stars appear on NXT, he said: “We never go into it asking for long term, we kind of take everybody’s temperature when they come here and hope that it does [last longer] and understand if it doesn’t, with their commitments.

“But I’ll say this, they really, really enjoyed being here on Tuesday… Xavier started here and he’s wanted to come back for a long time.

“They’re two guys who’ve been doing this for a long time now and they’ve accomplished everything – you get to that point where you really want to start to be able to give back and I think that’s where New Day is.

“I won’t lie, I am absolutely hoping to take advantage of that. We are going to do everything we can to keep them here as long as we can, and I’ve asked them if we could broach those conversations and they were certainly open to it.”

Of this weekend, Michaels added: “I’m really hoping that it’s certainly more a one-time thing, but it becomes a question of ‘how long?’

“Those are always the questions and we understand that; those are the ones they have to think about, they have to talk with family members and obviously things have to be straightened out between NXT and main roster talents.

“They appear to be open to the conversation, which we’re very excited about.”
