Meghan Markle ‘out jumps Peter Shilton’ as ex-England goalie mocked over ‘bigoted’ remark

Football fans found a clever way to poke fun at Peter Shilton after the former England goalkeeper hit out at Meghan Markle on Twitter.

Prince Harry and Meghan’s self-titled Netflix series is currently the highest-trending show on the platform, with sympathisers and detractors furiously butting heads about it across every social media platform out there.

Getting in on the act, Shilton took a swipe at the Duchess of Sussex, insisting she had “manipulated Harry” in order to get a “big house in California and a big bank balance” – while also managing to somehow mispel both her first name and surname.

“Megan Markel never was going to be part of our Royal family she is an American actress who has manipulated Harry to get what she wants! Which is a big house in California and a big bank balance playing every card including the race card,” Shilton wrote.

The tweet has garnered more than 40,000 likes, but the vast majority of replies were from people either criticising, or taking the mickey out of the former Three Lions star, with one angry fan commenting: “Used to idolise you as a kid. Hate seeing so many childhood heroes turn out to be bigoted and easily manipulated by the media.”

Several users hilariously edited the image of 5ft 5in Diego Maradona out jumping 6ft Shilton to score the infamous Hand of God goal at the 1986 World Cup by photoshopping Meghan’s face onto the late Argentinian superstar’s body – something Shilton didn’t appear to appreciate.

Shilton, a self-confessed royalist, praised Gareth Southgate following England’s World Cup defeat to France on Saturday, insisting the former defender needed to “stay on” as manager before urging fans to “keep the faith”.

Shilton earned a record 125 caps for his country over the course of his 30-year career and featured at three World Cup tournaments; 1982, 1986 and 1990.

Last year, he said he would “never forgive” Maradona for the Hand of God incident.
