Former Conservative MP Ann Widdecombe has suggested Meghan Markle could be “deliberately peddling conspiracy theories” by linking the 75-year-old politician to an alleged Royal Family plot to make the Duchess of Sussex a scapegoat.
One of the biggest talking points to come out of the final three episodes of the Harry & Meghan Netflix documentary, was the Duchess’ suggestion that the Firm deliberately fed negative stories about her to the media as a way of keeping other members of the family out of the headlines.
Widdecombe, who served as a cabinet minister when John Major was PM, was dragged into the debate when, as Meghan expressed her views on media coverage of her and her husband in the UK, the docuseries’ cameras focused on a newspaper headline in which the former Brexit Party member was reported as having branded the Duchess “trouble” during her stint on Celebrity Big Brother in 2018.

But the ex-Minister of State for Employment argued that the American must be “paranoid” if she believes that Widdecombe had been “briefed” to make the comment.
She also toldThe Sun: “If she doesn’t believe that then she is deliberately peddling conspiracy theories which have no basis in fact. I did say it on Big Brother but it was not about race.
“It was, in fact, that she was a moderately successful Hollywood actress who never lived in this country and didn’t know the first thing about the Royal Family and had already been divorced after two years of marriage.
“Bearing in mind the challenge of marrying into royals I said she would be trouble, but social media went into a spin. How on Earth that has anything to do with Buckingham Palace, I can’t imagine.”

Commenting on her planted stories theory in the documentary, Meghan said: “You would see it play out. A story about someone in the family would pop up for a minute, and they’d go: ‘We’ve got to make that go away’.”
The Daily Star has approached the Duchess of Sussex for comment.
