England fans say ’24 months mediocrity’ are coming as Gareth Southgate makes decision

Many England supporters believe “24 months of mediocrity” are on the horizon after news broke stating Gareth Southgate will stay on as England manager.

The Three Lions’ boss cast doubt over his future when he claimed he needed “time to reflect” on his future after England’s World Cup exit. France overcame the Euro 2020 finalists in the quarter-finals with a narrow 2-1 victory.

While Southgate was proud of the display, he admitted the constant criticism and the humiliating 4-0 defeat against Hungary had taken its toll. However, after reports from The Daily Telegraph appeared to confirm he will remain in his post, many England fans have been left disappointed by the news.

“At least 24 more months of mediocrity at its best then! Southgate’s England ladies and gents,” one disappointed supporter wrote on social media. “This year cannot get any worse. Bloody hell,” another fan commented.

“Painfully obvious. He’s just totally par. Beats anybody ‘lesser’ but bar Spain away in 2018 nations league never won a game England weren’t favourites for. Bookmark it Euro 2024 – England out at the first serious opposition,” one other England fan predicted.

“England winning nothing with his generation, confirmed,” another supporter confidently tweeted. Southgate has been in charge of the national side since September 2016.

Initially, he was only believed to take over on an interim basis to steady the ship while the FA came to terms with the chaos encapsulating Sam Allardyce’s reign. However, after some promising performances, the FA gave Southgate the job on a permanent basis at the end of November 2016.

Nearly five years after he was given the role permanently, Southgate put pen to paper on a new contract until 2024. Thomas Tuchel and Mauricio Pochettino were both linked with the England job if Southgate was to depart.

However, with Southgate now set to remain in his post, this will likely silence all talk linking the former Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur boss to the role.
