Sergio Aguero completely forgot Lionel Messi bet that’s pocketed former star almost £7k

Manchester City legend Sergio Aguero completely forgot about a bet that won him almost £7,000 at the World Cup.

Aguero had placed a $1001 (£823) bet on Lionel Messi being the player of the tournament under the winter sun in Qatar. And after Messi was announced as the Golden Ball winner following Argentina’s all-time great final with France, Aguero pocketed £6,800.

The former footballer said: “On 11/17/2022 (November 17) I bet that the best player in the World Cup would be Messi and I just realised it,” sharing a snap of the wager on his Instagram page.

Aguero wasn’t part of the Argentina squad in Qatar after he was forced to hang up his boots last December following heart problems shortly after a move to Barcelona.

However, Aguero trained with Argentina ahead of the final – with Lionel Scaloni even joking he notched a ‘great goal’ in training. The 34-year-old also roomed with Messi ahead of the final on Sunday evening, as the pair had done on international duty together in the past.

Aguero was spotted on the pitch as he celebrated with his former team-mates, going full John Terry wearing a full kit.

Messi’s Golden Ball, awarded to the best player at the World Cup, win was slightly controversial – with some fans suggesting the award should have gone to France’s Kylian Mbappe.

It’s the second time Messi has won the Golden Ball, also picking up the achievement at the 2014 World Cup.
