Michael Smith reveals preparation for darts final – watching Supermarket Sweep

Michael Smith is preparing to go wild in the aisles of the Alexandra Palace – by watching old episodes of Supermarket Sweep.

Bully Boy, who is in tonight’s (January 3) World Darts Championship final, is a dab hand when it comes to checkouts, so it should perhaps come as no surprise that he enjoys the trolly-dashing madness of one of the UK’s most popular gameshows.

Smith posted a snap on social media of two contestants on the reboot of the Dale Winton classic, writing: “Bit of Supermarket sweep.” He completed the tweet with a cry laughing and see no evil emoji, pre-empting the response he might get from fans.

One fan joked: “Remember next time you’re at the checkout and you hear the beep, think of the fun you could be having hearing @JohnMcDonald_MC shouting out “And champion of the woooooorrrrrrrrrrllllllllllllldddd”. Good luck tonight pal. You got this.”

Someone else wrote: “Love it! What better way to prepare for a World Darts championship final.” A third person commented: “Absolutely love this on the morning of the World Championship Final.”

While another fan added: “Now this is how you prepare for a world championship final, class.” Another quick-minded supporter cleverly dubbed the Supermarket Sweet theme tune over the top of Smith’s walk-on, with hilarious results.

Others asked why the World Darts Championship finalist wasn’t watching Catchphrase, with the 32-year-old having previously admitted to being a big fan of the show.

“I’ve never lost a semi-final here, so I know what it takes,” Smith said after his 6-2 semi-final win over Gabriel Clemens. “The kids came to watch my game yesterday and they put me off, so they were banned tonight – but they will be back tomorrow for the final.

“I’ll probably prepare for that by lying in bed all day and watching a few episodes of Catchphrase – anything to take my mind off darts.”

Smith takes on Michael van Gerwen in tonight’s final after the Green Machine whitewashed Dimitri van den Bergh 6-0 in their semi-final. It is a repeat of the 2019 final, which MVG won 7-3.
