Wayne Mardle ‘can’t speak’ in ‘amazing commentary’ of Michael Smith nine-darter

Wayne Mardle summed up the emotions of darts fans worldwide as he called Michael Smith’s nine-darter in the greatest leg in the sport’s history.

With Michael van Gerwen one set in front and at 1-1 in the second set, both players hit six perfect darts. Van Gerwen then hit two more, only to narrowly miss double 12 for a nine-darter.

However, Smith was not to be denied, nailing double 12 with his ninth dart of the leg to spark wild scenes in the crowd. It was only the second nine-darter in a World Championship final and the first since Adrian Lewis hit one against Gary Anderson in 2011.

As he picked up commentary for Smith’s final visit of the leg, Mardle declared: “I’ve never seen the like. Come on Bully Boy.”

After Smith hit treble 19, Mardle roared: “Yes, double 12. That is the most amazing leg of darts you will ever see in your life. I can’t speak, I can’t speak.”

A clip of Mardle going wild in the commentary box was tweeted by Sky Sports and went down well with fans. “Goosebumps. This might win it for leg of the sport. Sports moment of the year and we’re on the 3rd day. Simply beautiful. I’m shaking,” replied one.

“’I can’t speak, I can’t speak’ – The line that will echo in the dart world for a long time,” remarked another.

A third said: “Brilliant this.” Another simply added: “Outrageous.” One fan said: “Amazing commentary.”

However, the moment appeared to take it out of Mardle, who soon came off commentary with suggestion he had lost his voice. The former darts players tweeted: “I literally can’t spake!!!!!!!! What a final! Enjoy. @SkySportsDarts MVG V SMITH.
