Man Utd treble winner completely unrecognisable from playing days on fishing trip

Manchester United’s treble-winning class of ’99 will forever be remembered as heroes in the club’s history books.

But while the likes of Gary Neville, Paul Scholes, Roy Keane and David Beckham are still regulars on our TV screens and barely out of the public eye, not all members of that legendary squad have been keeping up appearances since winning the Premier League title, FA Cup and Champions League in that one momentous season before the turn of the Millennium.

And United fans have been left stunned at one member of Sir Alex Ferguson’s old squad, David May, who looks unrecognisable from his playing days after posting a picture of himself fishing to his Instagram account.

The former United centre-back played a crucial role for the Red Devils that season, starting in the victory against Tottenham on the final day of the Premier League campaign which clinched the title, as well as the FA Cup final win over Newcastle. May was also on the bench for that iconic night at the Nou Camp against Bayern Munich and is one of the key figures in the classic photos as United lifted the trophy.

He now co-hosts United’s official podcast, while also clearly enjoying his downtime. The 52-year-old is a regular on the golf course and also shared pictures of a fishing trip he went on in Thailand recently, where he is holding a huge 95 pound carp.

“Can’t beat a bit of carp fishing in Thailand 95lbs PB,” May wrote. Former teammate Scholes was impressed, commenting on the post: “F*** me.”

May’s importance within United’s squad had actually looked to be diminishing during that treble-winning season following the arrivals of Jaap Stam and Henning Berg, though injuries to both offered him a chance to write his own piece of history. He eventually ended up staying at United for a further four years, though only made 12 appearances due to injury problems. He retired in 2004 following a season at Burnley and a brief stint in non-league.

He has been well revered for his celebrations after the ’99 Champions League final and was a popular figure among United fans, who often chanted: “David May, superstar! Got more medals than [Alan] Shearer!”

One fan clearly remembered the chant well, commenting on his post: “David May superstar catch more carp than Shearer!”
