Rugby club’s nickname changed to ‘sexist bigots’ after controversially axing women’s team

The nickname of a Scottish rugby team has been changed to ‘sexist bigots’ on Wikipedia after they controversially cut their woman’s team.

Liberton RFC have been criticised by their women’s team – after the committee axed the side as it could no longer accommodate their “additional needs”. The women’s team took to their Facebook page to publish a statement, where they accused the committee of being “inaccessible and immovable with decision making”.

The statement also revealed any suggestions were “shut down or dismissed” by the committee, which had also reduced women’s team members by 50% in recent months. There were also claims of “misogynistic, racist and homophobic comments and behaviour at the club”.

Liberton’s Wikipedia page has since been changed so the clubs’ nickname reads ‘sexist bigots’. Meanwhile the club’s president has also come in for criticism.

The clubs’ captain Jess Sandham told the BBC: “We have had players leave the club altogether over these issues and when we have raised these to the committee they have just not been treated with the seriousness that we would have expected.

“Rather than conduct an investigation themselves and take it seriously, they put the onus back on the players themselves to provide more evidence that they actually happened.”
