Chris Dobey used to put out cones on motorway – and now he’s in Premier League Darts

Masters champion Chris Dobey reflected on his time “putting cones out on motorway contraflows” after he secured himself a place in Premier League Darts.

The 32-year-old overcame Rob Cross to win his first ever PDC title. Dobey put on a scintillating display in Milton Keynes to overcome Cross 11-7.

He will compete against the likes of Michael van Gerwen, Michael Smith, Peter Wright, and many more when the four month roadshow begins in Belfast on February 2. It certainly is a far cry from what he was doing before.

“I’ve come a long way since I was putting out the cones on motorway contraflows as a traffic management operative,” Dobey laughed after his victory.

“I knew this moment was coming and I’m already thinking about winning the next TV major, not just stopping at one. Am I ready for the Premier League? Who knows?

“But it will mean the world to me to play on that stage in front of the fans in Newcastle and I know my game has an extra gear to kick in.” The Geordie is becoming one of the Toon’s folk heroes in the world of darts.

The north east City is currently enjoying one of its greatest sporting periods in recent years, with Dobey’s excellent form coinciding with Newcastle United’s heroics in the Premier League and the League Cup.

“I don’t think the Masters trophy is quite big enough to be taking it round St James’ Park on a lap of honour, but the city is buzzing at the minute – the football’s going better than most people expected and we’re living the dream. It’s a one-club city and this is a huge week for Newcastle United.

“We could make it to our first cup final at Wembley in 24 years and obviously this is the best time of my darts life.” A draw in the League Cup semi-final second leg against Southampton would be enough to secure a place at Wembley for the Magpies in the Carabao Cup final.
