Wayne Mardle invents brilliant new word which leaves darts fans in stitches

Just a month on from his iconic “I can’t spake” line as Michael Smith hit a nine-darter in the World Championship final, Wayne Mardle has come up with another unique phrase – “faffage”

Mardle, who lost his voice after calling the greatest leg in the history of darts at Alexandra Palace, was back on Sky Sports duty as the 2023 Premier League got underway in Belfast.

With his voice back to working order, Mardle was delighting fans again with his witty insights as eight of best players in the world began the 17-week darting roadshow around the UK and Europe.

And one phrase in particular went down well with fans during the semi-final between Dimitri Van den Bergh and Michael van Gerwen.

Mardle first said Van den Bergh was “faffing” on his doubles as he struggled to close out a leg. After the Belgian continued to miss the outer ring, Mardle said the Dream Maker was guilty of “faffage”. He added: “Is that even a thing? He’s mucking around something chronic here.”

One delighted fan tweeted: “ @Wayne501Mardle Faffage!!!! Awesome. I can’t spake!!!”

Another said: “Faffage” might be a new one from Mardle.” A third posted: “Already there with a new term from @Wayne501Mardle – Faffage.”

A fourth fan wondered if the new term could lead to the purchase of a greyhound of the same name.

“New dog incoming #faffage,” they wrote. Mardle and Smith are planning to buy a greyhound and name it “I Can’t Spake”.

The commentator already has one dog named after one of his immortal lines – ‘Why Wasn’t I Told’ – a nod to an infamous interview he gave during his playing days which he didn’t realise was being broadcast live.
