Erik ten Hag ‘was offered nine alternatives to Marcel Sabitzer’ on Transfer Deadline Day

Erik ten Hag was offered 10 different midfielders on Transfer Deadline Day before Manchester United settled on Marcel Sabitzer.

The Red Devils found their hands forced after Christian Eriksen was ruled out until the end of April thanks to a reckless challenge from Andy Carroll. And Ten Hag settled on a six-month loan for Sabitzer from Bayern Munich.

It took all of United’s top dogs to get the deal done before the 11pm deadline: football director John Murtough, his deputy Andy O’Boyle, director of data science Dominic Jordan and head of recruitment Steve Brown were all involved.

ESPN say Ten Hag had been presented with 10 different options the Red Devils could move for on Transfer Deadline Day, before they worked around the clock to land Sabitzer.

On Sabitzer, Ten Hag said: “We’re really happy with the transfer because we need it. To bring a quality player in on deadline day, that is difficult, but we got this opportunity.”

While Murtough added: “Marcel is a player that we have watched for a long time.
