Liverpool fans already turning on Cody Gakpo – and it’s just like meme from The Simpsons

Liverpool fans are already running out of patience with Cody Gakpo mere weeks after the Dutch forward’s £38m move from PSV.

Gakpo has failed to score in any of his first seven appearances for Jurgen Klopp’s side and has looked a shadow of the goalscoring menace that lit up the 2022 World Cup.

The Reds, as a whole, have been playing poorly all season, but that doesn’t mean Gakpo is getting a free pass, as demonstrated by the mountain of criticism the 23-year-old received on social media following Liverpool’s 3-0 defeat to Wolves.

One supporter brilliantly parodied the abuse, likening a post labelling Gakpo “absolutely pointless” to a famous clip from The Simpsons where Ned Flanders furiously berates everyone in the neighbourhood after having an emotional breakdown.

Towards the end of the scene, Ned points at Homer’s colleague Lenny Leonard, and rages: “And as for you, I don’t know you but I’m sure you’re a jerk,” to which Lenny replies: “Hey, I’ve only been here a few minutes, what’s going on?”

Liverpool’s defeat to Wolves was their third in four league matches, and their second by a three-goal margin in the space of a month, leaving them a disappointing 10th in the table.

Klopp cut a dejected and angry figure in his press conference after the game and refused to answer questions from The Athletic reporter James Pearce, snapping: “It’s very difficult to talk to you if I’m 100% honest.

“I would prefer not to do that. You know why, for all the things you wrote. If somebody else wants to ask that question then I’ll answer it.”
