Jonny Clayton jokes he went to throw his darts in the bin after defeat but missed

Jonny Clayton joked he went to throw his darts in the bin and missed after his defeat to Michael Smith on Thursday night.

The Ferret was beaten 6-3 by the reigning world champion at the quarter-final stage of night two of this year’s Premier League Darts at the Motorpoint Arena in Cardiff. The loss marked a second consecutive exit at the first hurdle this season after Clayton was beaten by Dimitri Van Den Bergh at the same stage in Belfast last week.

However, Clayton was able to see the funny side after his below par performance in Wales as he spoke after the match.

In an interview with Online Darts, he joked: “Obviously his confidence is flying. I came off the stage and I threw my darts at the bin, but I missed that bloody thing as well, so yeah never mind, we will try again next week.”

Clayton’s loss to Smith, paired with his 6-2 defeat to Van Den Bergh on night one means that he is currently bottom of the standings following the first two nights of the season.

He will look to bounce back and get his campaign off and running in Glasgow next week, where he will take on week one winner Chris Dobey in the opening round.

Clayton won the Premier League as recently as 2021, the only time he has done so in his career, before reaching the play-offs last season, losing in the semi-finals.

Smith went on to lose to Nathan Aspinall in the semi-finals, with The Asp facing Gerwyn Price in the night’s final. This year’s Premier League season had started under a cloud of smoke after the controversial line-up of players was announced.

A number of stars made their feelings known after being snubbed by the PDC when the eight-man field was confirmed, with Vincent van der Voort branding the selections “ridiculous”.
