Keir Starmer and Rachel Reeves say Labour is party of ‘sound money’ in joint clip

Keir Starmer and his Shadow Chancellor Rachel Reeves have promised that Labour will be the party of “sound money” in No10.

In a party political broadcast aired on Wednesday evening the Labour duo said they “can’t promise the earth” if they win power – due to economic instability.

In a video just short of three minutes and focusing on finance, Ms Reeves warned: “We’re not going to be able to fix everything straight away.

“Everything we put forward will be fully costed and fully funded because we know that it is honest and realistic”.

But she pledged one of the biggest expansions of the struggling NHS workforce by abolishing the non-dom status of Britain’s super-rich.

The documentary-style clip also sought to highlight the Shadow Chancellor’s previous experience working for the Bank of England and financial services before entering Parliament.

Mr Starmer said she “is very clear in her own mind that a government is the custodian of public money” and that “every single pound has to be properly spent”.

The Shadow Chancellor said: “Starting right back when I saw my mum at a kitchen table going through her receipts and her bank statements, I know how important economic stability is to business and I know how important it is to families.

“And we haven’t had that stability these last few years.”

It comes after the party’s PR-blitz highlighting spending on the Government’s Procurement Card of five-star hotels and slap-up dinners at the taxpayers’ expense.

On Monday the party published the “GPC” files, with Deputy Leader Angela Rayner accusing the Tories of a “scandalous catalogue of waste” with lavish spending.

In total, at least £145 million of taxpayers’ cash was spent across 14 departments over the course of 2021 using Government Procurement Cards.
