Man Utd star had ‘easy’ answer when asked to pick worst player in the dressing room

Former Manchester United star Danny Simpson had an “easy” answer when asked to pick the worst player in the club’s dressing room.

Simpson made eight first-team appearances for the Red Devils after progressing through the academy before he departed for Newcastle United in 2010. During his time with United, he featured alongside the likes of Ryan Giggs, Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo and has now revealed how the senior stars connected with the reserve team players.

Discussing initiations during an appearance on the Undr The Cosh podcast, Simpson explained how he was once asked to name the worst player in the squad during a game of truth or dare.

“You do like truth or dare and I remember I did truth,” he recalled. “They ask you questions and they’ll say who’s the worst player in the dressing room. I picked an easy one as a get out.

“I picked David Bellion, do you remember him? I knew he couldn’t really understand what was happening either. There was a big pool of players, if you look at that squad back then it was scary, even the second XI was a joke.”

French striker Bellion had struggled to establish himself in the United attack after arriving from Sunderland in 2003, scoring just eight goals in 40 appearances for the club.

He was ultimately sold to Nice in 2006 after a string of loan spells, which included a temporary stint at West Ham United. Bellion did pick up FA Cup and Community Shield winners medals though.

Bellion now works as the creative director and brand manager for French third tier side Red Star FC, having spent two years playing for the club before retiring in 2016 aged 33.

As for Simpson, he made all eight of his United first-team appearances during the 2007/08 season and also had loan spells with Sunderland, Ipswich Town and Blackburn Rovers.

After leaving Old Trafford, the full-back went on to play for Queens Park Rangers, Leicester City, Huddersfield Town and Bristol City. He made 35 appearances as Leicester pulled off their shock Premier League title win in 2015/16.

Since retiring in March last year at the age of 35, Simpson has since transitioned into a punditry career and offers his services to both TV and radio coverage.
