UK weather forecast: Exact day snow flurries and -2C lows hit this week in Arctic blast

Brits are set for freezing temperatures to return as the week progresses with snow flurries and lows of -2C.

It was very mild on Monday with the mercury rising to 16C in Suffolk and it was quite widely in the low teens which is well above the average for the time of year.

But it will start to get colder and there will be a definite icy feel by the end of the week with the windchill factor included.

Looking further ahead and the country is still waiting for the Sudden Stratospheric Warming (SSW) phenomenon to hit at the start of March which could bring very cold temperatures and even another Beast from the East.

Looking to this week and for Wednesday morning, weather maps show that is when the snow will return with a few inches in central Scotland and light flurries through parts of England while temperatures dip to -2C.

It will be another fairly mild day on Tuesday with some wet weather in parts before the change arrives in the weather.

“Behind this weather front we’ve got a change in wind direction so that northwesterly will bring a chillier feel for much of us, quite a bit of cloud, some rain as well, that rain really dragging its heels to clear in the southeast and East Anglia, and something a little bit wintry over the hills but it is February after all,” said BBC forecaster Helen Willetts.

“I think what we will notice is more blue sky. In fact sparkling skies for many but temperatures will be 3C or 4C lower than they have been, back down to average.

“Now there could be a few wintry flurries heading their way southwards during Wednesday night into Thursday, I think the main thing Thursday morning is the chilly start.

“A fairly widespread frost returning for many and it won’t be the only frost that we see in the coming nights either. Ridge of high pressure.”

It will also be cold over the weekend with clearer skies.

“Then that high pressure returns pushing those weather fronts away, the isobars open up so it becomes less windy as we move into the weekend which means that we will have some night time frosts. So some chilly nights to come over the weekend once again,” added Ms Willetts.
