F1 boss hammered for ‘dead man walking’ comment about Schumacher in Drive to Survive

F1 chief Gene Haas has been slammed by Michael Schumacher fans after he was heard saying the legendary driver’s son Mick was a “dead man walking”.

The Haas owner’s comments were heard on the upcoming ‘Drive to Survive’ episode on Netflix titled ‘Like Father Like Son’. The Haas’ supremo said Mick was a “dead man walking” during a scathing phone call with team manager Guenther Steiner.

The F1 chief was furious with the 23-year-old after he lost control of his car on lap 27 of the Monaco Grand Prix before it completely split in two. And with the episode set to be released in the coming days, F1 fans have furiously reacted to Haas’ comments and to the title of the episode itself.

Fans described Haas’ description of Mick’s predicament as “vile”, while others directed their anger towards the Netflix directors who included the comment and decided on the title.

“That’s horrible to both Mick and Michael,” one furious supporter commented. “Wow, that is so tone deaf and disrespectful,” added another.

Schumacher senior is still recovering from the catastrophic brain injury he suffered in December 2013. The seven-time F1 world champion was placed into a medically induced coma for six months after he hit his head on a rock after skiing off-piste in the French Alps.

The helmet he was wearing is believed to be the reason he is still alive, but Schumacher is still suffering from the effects of that shocking day nearly ten years ago. The Schumacher family vowed to keep any details of his recovery and condition private.

Mick recently paid a touching tribute to his legendary father shortly after he signed for Mercedes as their reserve driver. At the launch of the new Mercedes’ car, Mick wore the same helmet his father used to wear.

The gold helmet featured the addition of black stars flanking the Mercedes logo which was front and centre.
