Tommy Fury could not hide his emotion after beating Jake Paul to win the grudge match that has “consumed my life” for the past two-and-a-half years – though insisted they were “tears of joy”.
The British fighter edged out his American rival in a split decision on points at the Diriyah Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia on Sunday, winning on two of the judges scorecards by 76-73, while the third was scored 75-74 in favour of YouTube star Paul.
Former Love Island contestant Fury did get knocked down by his opponent in the eighth and final round, however, after Paul caught him with his left hand, though he was adamant it was a slip that put him down. Speaking after the fight, a tearful Fury – who has only recently become a father – said: “For the past two-and-a-half years this has consumed my life but tonight I secured my own legacy.

“I dedicate this to my new baby Bambi at home and my missus, I miss you baby, I love you. I knew I would win this fight, I had the world and pressure on my shoulders but I came through.
“This is a world title for me. This was my first main event I will come back bigger and better and stronger, if he wants the rematch he can bring it on.”
Fury had the upper hand from the opening bell and got into an early lead despite it being a close contest. Both fighters were deducted a point each in the middle rounds – first Paul for punching round the back of the head, then Fury for holding.

Fury had requested an 8ft ring in the fight contract and spent much of it on the perimeter, dancing around Paul and working his jab. Paul had attempted to attack Fury’s body while having some success with an overhand right, but couldn’t deliver the crucial blow he needed to claim the victory.
Paul said after the fight: “All respect to Tommy, I will come back, I think we deserve the rematch. I am not sure I agree with the judges.
“I have already won in life, in every single way. I have amazing friends and family. This is a humbling experience but I will get back in the gym and we will be back.”
Despite their differences, the two fighters shared a warm exchange after the bell, where Fury told his rival: “I have nothing but love and respect for you brother. It was a great build-up and a great fight”.
