Liverpool fans are left baffled by Jurgen Klopp’s decision to not start Stefan Bajcetic

‘How on Earth do you start Elliott and Henderson and drop Bajcetic?’: Liverpool fans are left baffled by Jurgen Klopp’s decision not to start Stefan Bajcetic against Manchester United

  • Liverpool fans were left baffled that Stefan Bajcetic didn’t start at Anfield
  • Jurgen Klopp named the midfield on the bench versus Manchester United
  • Some fans felt that Bajcetic should have started instead of Jordan Henderson

Liverpool fans have been left baffled by Jurgen Klopp’s decision to leave Stefan Bajcetic out of the starting lineup against Manchester United.

Bajcetic has been a shining light in a challenging campaign for Liverpool, with the 18-year-old having produced some very impressive performances.

However, Klopp elected not to start the Spaniard against United, with the midfield consisting of Jordan Henderson, Fabinho and Harvey Elliott.

Liverpool fans took to Twitter to express their confusion with the decision.

One wrote: ‘How on Earth do you start Elliott and Henderson and drop Bajcetic? That’s criminal. If Klopp costs us more pts..’.

Klopp started with a midfield comprised of Jordan Henderson, Fabinho and Harvey Elliott

Some fans were particularly frustrated that Henderson started the game ahead of Bajcetic

Another added: ‘Mad that we’re gutted an 18 year old isn’t starting against Man Utd.

‘It goes to show 1. How good Bajčetić is and 2. How poor our midfield is.’

Another was particularly frustrated at Henderson starting over Bajcetic.

They wrote: ‘Klopp benching our undisputed most in form midfielder for one of our worst performers this season. I mean we all knew Klopp would start Henderson (whether you wanted him to or not), but doing it at the expense to Stefan Bajčetić is baffling to say the least.’

One fan stated that Bajcetic is a superior option to Elliott.

They wrote: ‘Bajcetic had to start for me. Lose legs in midfield when Elliott plays.’

Another wrote: ‘Not sure why you’d take Bajcetic out of the side for this one, and especially to replace him with that midfield 3’.

One fan wrote: ‘Can’t think of one good reason for not starting Bajcetic today.’

Klopp explained the thinking behind his midfield selection when speaking to Sky Sports.

He said: It’s a mix of what we need, the experience and the football part. Harvey played a really good game against Wolves. We set a new record, this season at least, in counter-pressing situations. Harvey was very much involved in that and on top of that Hendo (Jordan Henderson) is a good connector with these kind of things.

‘It’s nothing about Stefan, he was outstanding, we had other options as well.’

Anfield Watch reported that this is the fifth occasion this season that the trio of Fabinho, Henderson and Elliott have started together for Liverpool.

in the previous four, the Reds have won all four matches, scored 21 goals and only conceded twice.
