‘Germaphobe’ WWE Chairman Vince McMahon ‘ate sandwich with a knife and fork’

Vince McMahon was reportedly backstage at WWE Raw last night as rumours continue to swirl about his ‘return’ to the company.

The 77-year-old sports entertainment mogul was said to have been at the show in Boston, Massachusetts as WWE continued its road toward WrestleMania.

It comes as part of a hugely controversial last year for the 77-year-old, who announced his retirement from the wrestling megabrand just last July.

Amid a Board investigation into allegations of sexual misconduct, McMahon said on Twitter at the time: “At 77, time for me to retire. Thank you, WWE Universe. Then. Now. Forever. Together.”

Since then, the change in WWE has been almost constant. His daughter, Stephanie, assumed the role of Chairwomen of the Board – though Vince had always remained the majority shareholder.

Paul ‘Triple H’ Levesque, husband to Steph and Vince’s son-in-law, took up the mantle of Head of Creative in WWE and, with it, responsibility for what fans see on screen each week.

McMahon was soon back in the foreground, however. With speculation swirling that WWE was preparing itself for sale negotiations, McMahon reassumed his role as Chairman with Stephanie later stepping aside.

While there has been no official confirmation that McMahon has been back overseeing the creative side of WWE, many have speculated as much, particularly with WrestleMania – the biggest show of the year – on the horizon.

Fightful in the US noted that Vince, a former wrestler and commentator in his own company in prior decades, had been spotted backstage at Monday’s Raw.

It was added that this could have been Vince meeting up with WWE megastar John Cena who made his comeback on the show later in the evening, though there has been no official confirmation of McMahon’s visit.

The legendary promoter is, nonetheless, once again the talk of wrestling news and social media, with bizarre, crazy stories from his past never far away.

For instance, and according to countless tales from former wrestling stars and aides, McMahon despises sneezing – either himself or by anyone else – seeing it as a sign of lacking control.

Iconic former WWE commentator Jim Ross, who also worked as Head of Talent Relations for the wrestling supremo, shared a curious tale of McMahon’s eating habits.

Speaking in his autobiography, Under the Black Hat: My Life in the WWE and Beyond, Ross recalls being summoned to McMahon’s office to discuss the company switching TV networks in the early 2000s.

Ross wrote: “When I popped my head into his office, Vince was eating a sandwich with a knife and fork.

“The Chairman is a bit of a germaphobe. Even on longer days, when pizza was delivered, Vince would fold a slice and eat it up to where he touched it, then bin the rest.

“It was my daily challenge at WWE to ignore this while sitting across from him.”

Ross was the voice of WWE for a generation thanks to his efforts behind the commentary desk.

First debuting with the company at WrestleMania in 1993, he worked both full-time and occasionally on live television and pay per view events up until his departure in 2019.

Ross joined rival wrestling company All Elite Wrestling later that year, spearheaded by Tony Khan, where he was their lead commentator.

At 71, the stalwart still serves as the voice for key AEW events and was behind the desk for Revolution on pay per view this past Sunday.
