UK weather: Thundery downpours and biting frost as Brits brace for stormy weekend

Unsettled weather conditions are expected over the next few days, with sunny spells making way for thunderstorms and returning frost.

Sunshine interspersed with heavy thundery downpours is expected today, while Sunday will see a widespread frost in the morning.

The Met Office has reported that the weather will remain unsettled with windy conditions at times.

Mild conditions are expected today for most areas across the UK, with northern Scotland set to feel the cold the most.

Average temperatures are expected on Sunday, despite the day set to begin with icy conditions.

Going into the following week, heavy showers are forecast to return, with wintry conditions, such as strong winds and coastal gales, extending the colder weather well into spring.

Jim Dale, senior meteorologist for British Weather Services has agreed that the weather is set to be changeable going into next week.

He said: “The rest of the week and midst of next, it will be changeable and mostly mild. Rain at intervals, some (as now) heavy in the west, though most of coming weekend onside.”

Despite the cold conditions going into the end of March, he added that the UK has potentially had the last of the snow.

He said: “For the majority it’s looking that way. Highlands/Grampians still in the frame for a few weeks yet. Attention turning more to spring warmth and possible storms. Neither are there yet.”

Meteorologists at Netweather.tv claimed that the colder polar air may return from the north in the last five days of the month.

Weather map WX Charts have shown that colder conditions will return to the UK by the end of the month, bringing more rainfall with it.

Downpours are set to affect northern and western areas the most.
