Harry Kane beats Wayne Rooney’s goalscoring record – and does it in 174 fewer matches

Harry Kane has become the Premier League’s second highest all-time top goalscorer.

Kane has surpassed Wayne Rooney in the list of the Premier League’s greatest goalscorers after netting his 209th against Crystal Palace, achieving the feat in 174 fewer games than Rooney.

Spurs claimed their first win under Ryan Mason’s second stint as interim manager with Kane’s goal on the stroke of half-time the games only goal at the Tottenham Hotspur stadium.

Victory sees Spurs climb to sixth in the table ahead of Brighton & Hove Albion who play on Monday night, keeping their chances of European football alive.

But Kane’s goal had a very important personal aspect behind it as he moved closer to Alan Shearer’s all-time record, leaving no one else in between himself and the Geordie marksman.

Kane is now just 51 goals behind Shearer’s record of 260 goals and at only 29 years old the chance to become the league’s greatest ever goalscorer is well within reach, the next milestone on Kane’s list after he previously topped Rooney’s all-time England goalscoring record and becoming Spurs’ all-time top goalscorer with 276 and counting.

It’s unclear whether Kane will continue his march towards Shearer’s record at Tottenham next season with him heavily linked with a switch to Manchester United.

Bayern Munich have also been touted but a move away from England at this stage of his career will all but see his chance of taking Shearer’s record vanish.

Despite the three points, Tottenham are still six points behind United in 4th place and have played two games more, whilst Newcastle and Liverpool also hold an advantage over the Lilywhites in the race to finish in the Champions League spots.

Tottenham could have a tough decision on their hands in the summer with Kane possibly looking to leave North London in the quest for Champions League football and a shot at breaking his career trophy duck as he enters the final year of his Tottenham contract.
