Arsenal ‘fan’ selling ‘Champions 23’ kit on Facebook Marketplace for £0

Arsenal’s dreams of Premier League glory have been left in tatters – with one unfortunate garment a telling reminder of their once enviable position.

A Gunners away shirt with the word “Champions” printed on the back as well as the number 23 have been listed on Facebook Marketplace with Manchester City set to win a fifth title from six seasons.

The ‘seller’ has comically listed the condition as “full of tears” while requesting a fee of £0 in a bid to get rid of the cursed item, with Mikel Arteta’s men set to end the season without silverware.

Although it isn’t clear whether the alleged seller is in fact playing a prank, it is a telling reminder of Arsenal’s once strong lead at the top of the table.

Arteta and his team held an eight-point lead earlier in the year, but a run of three consecutive draws as well as a defeat at the Etihad eliminated their advantage.

The shirt was listed at the beginning of May with the worst yet to come, with Arsenal fans around the Bradford area no doubt keen to steer clear.

After winning against Chelsea and Newcastle to keep Arsenal’s slim hopes alive after the run of four without a win, losing 3-0 at home to Brighton left Pep Guardiola’s City four points clear with a game in hand.

Arteta was quick to take the blame following their Emirates capitulation, despite fans looking at Bukayo Saka’s missed penalty against West Ham and William Saliba’s injury as pivotal moments.

The Spaniard told Sky Sports: “I hate the feeling of letting people down when they’re really expecting something. That’s the biggest regret I have today.”

“A week ago, I was standing here feeling proud and today we have to apologise for the performance in the second half. It was not acceptable.

“Mathematically, it’s still possible, but today it’s impossible to think about it.

“We need to digest the result and the performance in the second half, understand why and have a different reaction.”
