Rain ‘will flip to widespread snow later this week’ as UK set for heavy flurries

A number one climate forecaster expects rain to show into snow later this week, with the white stuff presumably coming down “on a extra widespread scale”.

A Met Office climate warning for snow is in place in Scotland at the moment (Wednesday, December 27) as Storm Gerrit sweeps in. Several different warnings for rain and wind are in place throughout the nation as journey delays, floods and energy outages are on the playing cards.

Although at the moment’s snow must be confined to the hills in Scotland, Exacta Weather forecaster James Madden reckons we may quickly see extra of it elsewhere. He stated: “If we look further ahead to later in the week, and for in and around December 29 and into the New Year/early January, then a complicated picture develops overall.

“We are likely to see further rain turning to snow or heavy snow in this period, but on a more widespread scale as it clashes with the somewhat cooler conditions from midweek onwards across our shores. Now this particular period has the potential to bring about a number of snow events across the country that could see parts much further south being dragged into the equation for snow too.”

The Met Office has stated “further hill snow” is probably going in northern areas as this week progresses.

Madden additionally reckons a extra vital snow occasion is probably going in January as sudden stratospheric warming (SSW) appears possible. Despite its title, SSW could cause temperatures to plummet and widespread snow. It was accountable for the ‘Beast from the East’ in 2018.

Madden stated: “Our forecast indications are currently showing the potential for a high risk and prolonged spell of cold and snow/Easterly winds to start kicking in for the British Isles for in and around mid-January, possibly a little earlier or for in and around January 10.”
