Rory McIlroy has been dubbed an “amateur” after making a quadruple bogey on the Dubai Invitational.
The Northern Irishman suffered a catastrophe on the par-three eighth gap throughout his second spherical on the DP World Tour occasion. Having led by two after spherical one, McIlroy carded a woeful seven after discovering the water twice.
Yet the four-time main winner recovered in gorgeous style, birdying the tenth, thirteenth and fifteenth holes. The 34-year-old stays on track to begin his 12 months with a win, main by two after 36 holes on the Dubai Creek Resort.

Yet McIlroy’s benefit may have been far higher if not for his errors, which sparked a hilarious response from golf followers on social media as they had been reminded that even the greats could make errors.
One X consumer joked: “That makes me feel better, I very rarely make a quad. What an amateur,” whereas one other tweeted: “God damn it Rory. A quadruple bogey.. Really?”

A 3rd identified: “McIlroy needed the quadruple bogey to get himself set up for the rest of the round,” whereas a fourth vented: “First hole of the Dubai Invitational I watch and McIlroy makes a quadruple bogey *facepalm*.”
Commenting on his efficiency, McIlroy mentioned: “If I look at the other 17 holes, I played very, very well again. I hit some good iron shots and maybe holed a couple more putts yesterday but the conditions are getting trickier.
“The wind was up, the greens are firm and I had a couple of miscues on the eighth. I felt like I did well to get my head back into it and play some solid golf on the way in.”
