England icon Gascoigne wanted assist for ‘actually embarrassing drawback’ at Spurs

When Paul Gascoigne joined Tottenham Hotspur, his Geordie accent was so thick that he wanted Chris Waddle to translate for him.

Gazza performed for Spurs within the late Nineteen Eighties and early Nineties, making over 100 appearances for the Lilywhites. He famously helped the membership win the FA Cup in 1991, having joined from Newcastle United in 1988.

However, it wasn’t all plain crusing when Gascoigne first rocked up at White Hart Lane. Speaking to the Daily Mirror, Gazza revealed a difficulty he had when he first joined the membership.

The England legend stated: “No one could understand a word I was saying. They had to get Chris Waddle to translate for me at training. It was really embarrassing.”

Chris Waddle, additionally from Gateshead like Gazza, now works as a pundit and commentator. When Gazza moved to Italy in 1992 to affix Lazio, he remembered an incident the place the supervisor Dino Zoff interrupted coaching for a telephone name.

Gazza recalled: “He said ‘Gazza, there is a call for you,” remembered Paul. “So I said ‘just ask him to ring back’. He said: ‘you don’t understand, you have to take it.’ I said ‘but I am getting ready for training boss’. Then he said: ‘It’s the Pope’.”

The Pope, John Paul II, who was a goalkeeper in his youth in Poland, needed to satisfy Gazza. Paul recalled: “I don’t know why but I said ‘Hello Popey!’ It turned out the Pope wanted an audience with Gazza.”

He later visited the Vatican along with his dad and mom. But considered one of his most amusing encounters was when he met former world heavyweight champion Mike Tyson in Dunston, Gateshead.

Boxer Mike Tyson, on the age of 41, paid a shock go to to soccer legend Gazza’s mum’s dwelling in Tyneside again in 2008. Gazza recalled: “I could hear a man outside shouting: ‘Gazza, are you in?’ in an American accent.”

He continued: “When I opened the bedroom window, there was Mike Tyson standing in the street. I thought ‘f*** me, ‘it’s Mike Tyson’ and went down to meet him. We ended up going out for my birthday. It was handy as you don’t get into any trouble with Mike Tyson [around].”

Mike Tyson needed to lend his help to Gazza, having confronted his personal struggles post-career. He acknowledged: “I know all about Gazza. I feel I can help him. A lot of top sportsmen have suffered in their private lives, including me, and I want to help.”
