“A lot of people didn’t understand that what he did (at Alexandra Palace) was a great thing for the sport. Those stats were incredible – five million people watching the World Championship final.

‌“That was a beneficial thing for me as well as Luke. We are all going to benefit from the attention to darts, just like we did with Fallon (Sherrock).

“It’s mind-boggling how he’s become part of the elite in such a short space of time. That can happen in sport on the very rare occasions, but we are in an era where no-one will dominate. Luke Littler won’t dominate, I won’t dominate.”

He admitted: “I think I’m at the stage in my life where it can’t get any better but it’s important for me to stay motivated and to stay determined to stay where I am.

“I do believe you can become complacent. When you’ve reached the summit you can lapse too much when you kind of think it doesn’t matter how I do now, and suddenly you find yourself 10th, 11th, 12th in the world. I don’t want to be there.

“I’m hoping the next two years will be just as good. I just think living a healthier lifestyle and doing everything in a proper way will benefit you in every tournament.

“I won’t eat bad food before I play. If you eat burger and chips it makes you lethargic, and there are certain routines that I stick to every day.

“I can’t set any more goals that will achieve more than I already have, but I want to win one more major this year – a Premier League or maybe the World Cup.”
