Hospital evacuated after ‘ceiling collapse in A&E’ as fireplace crews race to scene

A hospital in Bristol has been evacuated, reportedly due to a ‘ceiling collapse’ in A&E.

Bristol city’s main hospital, Bristol Royal Infirmary (BRI) on Marlborough Street, saw people pulled out over reported fears around the integrity of a part of the ceiling, Bristol Live has reported.

An eyewitness at the hospital has reported seeing at least three fire engines outside of the hospital. They said: “BRI has been evacuated. Three fire engines on scene.”

One person told Bristol Live: “The place was evacuated, with fire alarms sounding and [we’re] all outside in the fire evacuation area”.

The same outlet has been informed that the issue could centre on the ceiling, with confirmation having been sought. Dramatic images from the scene show fire engines and crowds of people gathered on the street near the BRI.

In a statement on X, formerly Twitter, University Hospitals Bristol and Weston NHS said: “We have declared an internal critical incident due to a power outage affecting a number of our hospitals in Bristol city centre. We are asking the public not to attend our hospitals until the incident is resolved. Please use alternative services in the area.

“Anyone needing urgent medical help should contact NHS 111. Keep an eye on our social media channels for further updates.”
