Computer says no – cowardly youngsters admit they turn to artificial intelligence for help in dumping a partner.
New research on attitudes to using AI found more than half of all singletons would now consider artificial intelligence tools to develop their profile, give them dating coaching, and work out a good opening chat-up line. But those under 24 are most likely to use the tech to ditch someone.
More than half said when it came to writing a text to break up, they would use AI to do it for them. James Hicks, a 23-year-old sales assistant from Hull, said: “Breaking up with people is awkward. Especially if it has only been few dates.

“AI can do the job for you and I can see why people will do it. Better than ghosting someone.”
The Norton Cyber Safety Insights report revealed a new openness to using AI for various aspects of dating. Across all ages, 55% of UK app users would be likely to use AI to develop their dating profile – over 60% in the 24-44 group, but only 39% of 18-24-year-olds.
For all tasks, men were keener to use AI than women – except for an even percentage who’d take AI creating their profile. Overall four out of ten liked the idea of AI acting for them on their first ‘date’ – either partly through with their prompts or entirely on its own – before going on to meet a match if it went well.

But when it came to the awkward job of ending a relationship – half of under 24s would love to chicken out of doing it themselves.
Leyla Bilge, Norton’s Director of Scam Research, said: “Our 2024 report signifies a societal behaviour shift around dating. People are looking to AI to simplify and enhance the experience.
“But it’s important to consider the other side of that. We know cybercriminals are also becoming adept at using AI to exploit and scam people.”
