Three new motoring guidelines set for May – from ULEZ adjustments to automotive insurance coverage

New motoring rules are coming for May.

From car insurance changes that could lower bills to parking fee increases in certain UK areas. Additionally, there could be updates to the Ultra Low Emissions Zone (ULEZ).

This follows hot on the heels of several rule updates in April, including new EU driving licence and International Driving Permit regulations.

From May 1, Nottingham drivers will see parking charges rise in West Bridgford and Rushcliffe Country Park, reports the Express.

Most road users who park for less than two hours will see a minor 20p increase on their parking tickets. Meanwhile, Rushcliffe Country Park will scrap their £1 day rate.

The council defended the price hikes, claiming they remain “still competitive” compared to other towns and highlighting it’s the first increase in seven years.

Later in May, parking fees will also go up by £1 at Colwyn Bay Promenade in Wales. These changes kick in from May 29, with motorists charged over £7.50 for parking in bays for more than four hours.

Meanwhile London’s ULEZ changes are set to come into effect on May 4. Tory hopeful Susan Hall vowed to bin the expanded ULEZ scheme.

Over at Reform UK, candidate Howard Cox is also ready to chuck the ULEZ out the window. Meanwhile, Sadiq Khan is sticking to his guns, refusing to bring in a pay-per-mile system.

As for car insurance, the Association of British Insurers (ABI) is on a mission to slash costs for drivers with their fresh-off-the-press ‘Premium Finance Principles’ report.

The ABI is adamant that firms “must ensure that costs associated with monthly instalments represent fair value”.

According to the guidelines, “charges should be reasonable” and need to be “relative to the costs of providing premium finance”.

Insurance companies “must regularly review the cost to customers”, keeping in mind that loads of drivers can’t cough up the cash for upfront fees.

The ABI’s pledged to circle back with a report on how these shiny new principles are shaping up by summer 2025.
