This is the dramatic moment plain clothes police officers frisk a suspect at a busy east London Underground station and find a huge machete.

In a video posted to X, formerly Twitter, five plain clothed police officers, from the British Transport Police, can be seen wrestling the suspect to the ground while they search him on the platform of West Ham station.

One of the officers then discovers what appears to be a large machete hidden on his person.

Trains can be seen coming and going from the station as commuters walk past unaware of what is occurring right next to them.

One young family does stop to watch the incident and they can be seen staring at the weapon in the officer’s hand.

Last week in Hainault, east London, a man killed a 14-year-old boy and injured four others after he went on a violent rampage attacking people with a large sword.

Police scrambled to the area following reports that a van had rammed into a home just before a knifeman started prowling the streets.

He then attacked two officers before being tasered and arrested in a bloody scuffle in front of horrified residents who heard ‘piercing screams’.

The suspect, Marcus Arduini Monzo, has since been charged with the murder of schoolboy Daniel Anjorin and two counts of attempted murder. He will appear at the Old Bailey.

Knife crime in the capital became a prominent campaign issue during this year’s London Mayoral election. During a debate on LBC, Mayor Sadiq Khan and Tory candidate Susan Hall clashed during a discussion over knife crime.

Mr Khan dismissed Ms Hall’s fears of rising crime rates after she claimed there were ‘gangs running around with machetes’ in London.

She added: ‘That’s the stories I’m hearing from the people that are running the night economy. That is not good.’

Mr Khan replied: ‘I say in a respectful way, I think the Tory candidate should stop watching The Wire. We’re not living in Baltimore, USA, in the noughties.’

In the election last Thursday, Mr Khan won re-election comfortably.
