Inside ‘real-life Fawlty Towers’ with ugly bedding, mouse poo and impolite host

A grim guesthouse comes with a boozy and obnoxious “Basil Fawlty” host, revolting bedding and mouse droppings.

Minster Garth Guest House in Beverley, Hull, East Riding of Yorkshire earns one and a half stars on Tripadvisor, and for good reason.

The wretched accommodation is run by a “rude” proprietor, John Dixon Hart, who called a woman demanding a refund a “c***”, reports Daily Star, and was jailed in August 2023 for 22 weeks for public order and harassment offences.

Likened to Basil Fawlty by a judge, Hart admitted to drinking on the job, saying that in the evenings he was “in the habit of drinking quite a few vodka and Cokes and that worsened my behaviour towards guests.”

Luxurious images were used to falsely market the grim digs

Hart was busted using fake pictures to promote his disgusting guesthouse, we reported earlier, luring in guests with the promise of luxury.

However rooms were so horrid, one disgruntled visitor was so repulsed by the stench and filth in her room that she went out to buy cleaning supplies, a court heard.

He faced Hull Crown Court earlier this year for falsely marketing his squalid guest house, we reported earlier. Although Hart claimed his hotel was a three or four-star experience, a council investigator concluded that even one star was too kind.

He was given a nine-month suspended prison sentence and ordered to carry out 20 days of rehabilitation and pay £729 in compensation to eight unhappy guests.

Guests complained of mouse poo and dead insects

Rooms start at £34, but you get what you pay for at the guest house, as guests noted rooms were filthy with dead bugs and mouse poo, stained bedding and a “musty and tobacco-smelling” pong.

One recent TripAdvisor review gave it one star, and said: “The room isn’t like the photo and John comes across horrid , the bedding hasn’t been changed, black old towels that haven’t been changed, John only wants texts and wants to just argue… Horrible gentleman.”

Another one star review stated that one of the two booked rooms had not been serviced, with three beds left unmade, adding: “The bed nearest the window was soaking wet, wet towels were left on the floor and there was so much rubbish including half eaten meals”.

When the reviewer’s wife tried to speak to Hart, she was “sworn” and told “F***ing female I only speak to men”.

A solo traveller jokingly gave the hotel five stars, for the blood on the walls that “made the paint look so real”, grubby kettle, and the empty vending machine in the hall.

Another review described the guest house as a “hell hole”.
