Man Utd scrap annual awards night time after woeful season for Erik ten Hag’s flops

Manchester United have scrapped the club’s end of season ‘Player of the Year’ awards night.

The event is normally held at Old Trafford at the conclusion of every campaign, to celebrate the stand-out performers from the men’s, women’s and youth teams. But United, who have endured a miserable season which has left manager Erik ten Hag facing the sack, have decided not to go ahead with the lavish awards dinner this time round.

United insist the dinner will not take place because there is not enough time in their schedule. Ten Hag’s men finish their miserable Premier League season this weekend before taking on Manchester City in the FA Cup final a week later.

But United did go ahead with the event last season – despite also facing City in the FA Cup final 12 months ago in a 2-1 defeat.

The awards will still be announced, with United skipper Bruno Fernandes and Alejandro Garnacho among the favourites to be named Player of the Year. But there will be no formal ceremony, with the winners being announced on the club’s social media channels instead.

When United held the event last year, it was on the back of a promising first season under Ten Hag. The Dutchman led United to both domestic cup finals, winning the FA Cup, as well as a third place finish in the Premier League.

But Ten Hag and his flops have little to celebrate or acknowledge this time round.

United have lost 14 Premier League games this season, their most in the modern era, crashed out of the Champions League at the group stages and are currently eighth in the table and in danger of missing out on European football altogether next season.
