‘Wayne Rooney is correct on Man Utd flops – is there sinister motive for accidents’

Wayne Rooney pulled no punches as a player – and he’s doing the same as a pundit.

In the wake of yet another defeat for Manchester United, Rooney stuck the boot into his former club by claiming some of Erik ten Hag’s flops are hiding behind their injuries to avoid all the flak. He reckons some of United’s mollycoddled millionaires are staying out of the firing line because the heat has got too hot.

“Some of those players can play, 100%,” said United’s record scorer. Because they’re getting a bit of stick, it’s easy for players to stay out and come back towards the FA Cup final and get themselves right for the European Championship.

“I’ve seen it for myself over the years. The players who have been injured are not filling themselves with any credit at the minute and the manager is taking all the stick for it.”

What a damning assessment this is of the current state of play at United, from one of the club’s genuine icons.

But it could have been even worse, believe it or not. Has anyone stopped to think there might be an even more sinister reason for so many players being on the sidelines at United?

Which is that they don’t want to get injured between now and the end of the season to ruin a potential move elsewhere.

A scenario even more disgraceful. But considering how bad United now are, who could blame them?
