Wetherspoons workers’s ‘double’ trick to fleece extra cash from thirsty punters

Wetherspoons staff employ a cunning trick to make thirsty and thrifty punters part with more cash.

Employees of the budget pub chain have a tried and tested way to upsell to customers at the point of sale, squeezing a little more cash out of people with a thirst for cheap booze.

Staff ask customers if they want a double before asking if they would like a single, reports LadBible.

Documentary Wetherspoons: How Do They Do It? revealed the selling technique is taught to bar staff during training.

An employee said: “It’s part of the training for members of staff to try and add an extra item onto every order.”

Another staff member said: “[We say] ‘do you want a double or do you want a single?’ We say the word ‘double’ first so it sticks in their head. It works most of the time.”

Wetherspoons denies upselling booze claiming in a statement that upselling is only encouraged for soft drinks.

The statement said that customers are asked “if they want a pint of Pepsi, rather than the standard size”, however the chain has “discouraged” upselling spirits “for the last 10 years”.

The statement also said staff must use a precise pour.

In other Wetherspoons news, plans for a Super Spoons is underway.

Daily Star reports the colossal, multi-million pound venue is set to open in Newcastle and will come with a 3,000sq foot beer garden – the biggest in Britain.

The no-frills budget chain of boozers is set to invest £5million into creating a Super Spoons, which will be everything a Spoons should be, and then some.

The mega-establishment will take over The Mile Castle in Newcastle, which already operates as a Wetherspoons . The redevelopment will see the site double in size, as Britain’s biggest beer garden and a 26-room hotel are added.
