Ex-PGA Champ John Daly’s wild life – 4 ex-wives to consuming 35 beers a day

Golf icon John Daly, fondly known as ‘Wild Thing’, is making a comeback to the PGA Championship this week in an age-defying move at 58 years old.

This astonishing return comes 33 years after he scooped victory in the competition when he was a last-minute alternative. Daly has quite the reputation, both on and off the green – his nickname is fitting thanks to numerous wild tales from his personal life.

One such escapade involves an argument with his wife where $55,000 (£43,000) was somehow thrown out of their car window, reports Mirror Sport.

The California-born golf legend once boldly bragged about his ability to polish off between 35 and 40 beers in a single day, affirming his never-far-from-action persona. Known to be a heavy drinker, even in the lead-up to a big tournament, Daly confessed to Graham Bensinger in a 2016 interview that his golfing prowess often peaked during alcohol-induced stupors.

“It’s amazing where I would go, wherever I set course records or whatever, I would be barefooted drunk,” said the winner of two majors.

“Playing golf, making every 20-footer I looked at, I used to be able to shoot pool really good when I was, had a great buzz going. But if you get me sober and play pool, I wouldn’t make a ball. I don’t know, it’s yeah.”

“I was a binge drinker, you know, and that’s to me, I could go two months without drinking. But if I get on a binge, I could drink for three months or seven days or two days. It just depends, I mean when I wanted to quit drinking.”

In addition to his boozing habits, Daly has had quite a colourful love life, having been married four times. His first marriage was to Dale Crafton in 1987, followed by marriages to Bettye Fulford and Paulette Dean in the 1990s.

His most recent marriage was to Sherrie Miller in 2001, which has made the most headlines after the former couple brawled at a restaurant during the Stanford St. Jude Championship.

Daly alleged that Miller had assaulted him with a steak knife. The golfer showed up to the tournament’s second round with visible cuts and scrapes on his face, adding fuel to the already raging media frenzy.

Daly has always remained true to himself, even being spotted puffing away during his practice round at Valhalla on Tuesday. Fans will once again have the chance to see him in action, possibly sipping on a Diet Coke… or 12.
