Man Utd followers boo Ten Hag in his Old Trafford speech – regardless of beating Newcastle

Erik ten Hag faced boos on the Old Trafford pitch during a speech to Manchester United supporters in a post-match address on Wednesday evening.

Ten Hag, 54, has had a torrid season, with 14 Premier League defeats to his name. Despite pulling off a 3-2 victory over Newcastle at home, doubts surround their ability to qualify for European football next year.

The Dutchman’s future remains uncertain as links with other coaches for the top job at United only grow stronger after United’s lacklustre performances this season.

It was a hard pill to swallow as some of his words were washed away by jeers from the opposition fans following the Newcastle win.

“On behalf of the players, the staff and myself, we want to thank you for the brilliant support during the season,” he said right before discontent erupted from the audience.

“As you know it wasn’t an easy season, but one thing remained constant and that was the backing of you for the team. But the season is not over yet, first we travel to Brighton to get three points and then we go to Wembley.

“And I promise you that those players will give everything to win the cup and bring it to Old Trafford. And we are sure you will be there supporting us. So thank you, you are the best supporters in the world,” reports the Mirror.

Reacting to the result, Ten Hag reflected that it was important to sign off at Old Trafford for the season with a win. United travel to Brighton on Sunday before facing Manchester City in the FA Cup final next weekend.

He told BBC Sport post-match: “It’s always nice to win any game. It’s important to win the last game at Old Trafford this season. The fans deserve this because they’ve had difficult times and always stayed with us. We are here together. We wanted to pay the fans back.”

“Fantastic. Great goals. But it was a team effort how we made the goals. But I’m always happy at young players who are progressing very good and scored some brilliant goals.”

“Newcastle have a lot of physical power and you have to match that but you also have to play football. We had found the really good balance in this.”
