Man Utd backed into nook over Bruno Fernandes contract after star’s ultimatum

Manchester United could be forced to hand Bruno Fernandes a bumper new deal to keep him at Old Trafford.

Fernandes admits he will walk out on United this summer if the club no longer wants him. United are expected to overhaul their squad ahead of next season following a woeful campaign.

And Fernandes, who has been linked with moves to Bayern Munich and Saudi’s Pro League, insists he needs to feel loved to stop him from leaving Old Trafford. United boss Erik ten Hag claims United are desperate not to lose the Portugal international.

But Ten Hag could be sacked at the end of the season, casting more doubt on Fernandes’ long term future. Fernandes, 29, is under contract at United until 2026 on a deal worth £230,000-a-week.

But he has seen the likes of Raphael Varane, Casemiro and Marcus Rashford handed deals worth more than his. He knows his next contract will be the last big one of his career, and holds all the aces when it comes to negotiating with United.

And if United do want to keep him, club bosses will have to make him one of the highest paid stars in the dressing room to stop him from going elsewhere. It’s understood Fernandes will hold talks with United once the season has finished.

But he is keen to resolve his immediate future before heading to Euro 2024 with Portugal, and doesn’t want the growing speculation to overshadow his participation in the tournament.

Eighth-placed United face Brighton at the Amex Stadium on Sunday, hoping they can better Newcastle’s result away to Brentford and therefore finish ahead of the Magpies in seventh and qualify for European football next year in the Europa Conference League. A victory over title-chasing Manchester City in the FA Cup final later this month however would instead ensure qualification for the Europa League.
