World No1 Scottie Scheffler detained by police in handcuffs outdoors golf venue

World No.1 golfer Scottie Scheffler has been detained in police handcuffs following a misunderstanding.

Scheffler, 27, was detained by police when he attempted to drive past a police car, following a misunderstanding with traffic flow, into the Valhalla Golf Club. The venue is playing host to the 106th PGA Championship – where Scheffler is currently competing.

The American was immediately flagged down by police, who placed him in handcuffs at the scene. Scheffler was detained in the back of a police car – but, according to reports, he has since been released by Louisville Police.

Sky Sports’ Jamie Weir posted on X, formerly known as Twitter: “Just been told Scottie Scheffler has now been released by Louisville Police after initially being detained following some confusion as he tried to navigate around a traffic cordon.”

Scheffler was scheduled to tee off at 1.48pm UK time. And he’d have been looking to build on an excellent first round that featured a 167-yard hole-out on hole No. 1.

Scottie Scheffler was detained by police at the scene

Police had already been at the scene after a road traffic accident had caused a delay to the second day of the championship. In a statement released to News Radio 840 WHAS, the Louisville Metro Police said there had been an incident.

The statement read: “About 5:00 this morning, the LMPD responded to a call of a vehicle collision involving a pedestrian and a bus.

“Our preliminary investigation found that an adult male pedestrian was crossing Shelbyville Road south to north when he was struck by a shuttle bus that was traveling eastbound in the compulsory centre lane dedicated for buses.

“As a result, the pedestrian received fatal injuries and was pronounced dead on the scene. The LMPD Traffic Unit is investigating.”
