Southgate ‘leaves favorite participant out of provisional England Euro squad’

Jordan Henderson has missed out on Gareth Southgate’s Euro 2024 squad.

Southgate will name his 31-man provisional squad on Tuesday afternoon – and reports suggest that the Ajax midfielder won’t be part of his set up. Henderson, 33, has been key to Southgate’s sides in recent years, but he won’t be with the team in Germany.

According to The Athletic, Henderson won’t be on the long list that will be announced on Tuesday. And football fans haven’t taken long to voice their opinions on social media.

“How the football will feel with no Hendo,” one fan shared, with a gif of Diego Maradona in his pomp. While a second said: “Should not be a shock this, he’s 33 and has been playing Conference level football for most of the past season…”

“This might be the best day of my life,” a third said. And another added: “If true, I would be absolutely stunned!”

Henderson has been playing his football outside of England this season – he left Liverpool in the summer for the Middle Eastern riches of Saudi Arabia. The midfielder linked up with Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard at Al-Ettifaq.

However, he packed his bags and moved back to Europe in the winter, swapping the sun and sand for Dutch giants Ajax.

The report states uncapped Liverpool midfielder Curtis Jones is expected to replace his former Reds captain, while another uncapped player is set to make the cut.

Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford is expected to be named as England’s third-choice goalkeeper, despite Arijanet Muric taking his spot between the sticks for Burnley due to a poor run of form in the Premier League.

Southgate will make his long list announcement at 2pm.
