Shoppers warned over in style pasta sauce recall because it ‘comprises glass’

Supermarket giant Waitrose has issued an urgent recall for its pasta sauce amid fears it could be laced with glass. The high-end grocer’s supplier sounded the alarm after discovering the potential danger in jars of Sugo Alla Norma by Crosta and Mollica.

Shoppers have been warned not to tuck into the Italian treat and instead return it to their nearest Waitrose store for a full refund. In a statement, they said: “We are recalling a selected date of the above product because of the possible presence of glass. We apologise that it has been necessary to recall this product and for the inconvenience caused.”

Today, Waitrose added: “Crosta and Mollica is recalling its Sugo Alla Norma Aubergine, Ricotta and Tomato because it may contain pieces of glass. In line with their instructions, we’re asking any customers who have purchased this item (with the batch code of Y008B and best before 8 January 2027) not to consume it, and to return it to one of our shops for a full refund.”

This isn’t the first time shoppers have had to beware of glass in their grub; just two months ago, a similar scare was sparked by a popular curry product sold at both Waitrose and Sainsbury’s. The product in question was Patak’s Aubergine Pickle, produced by AB World Foods, reports the Mirror.

Despite the risk being described as “very low”, the recall was issued for jars of the pickle “as a precaution” after the discovery of potential glass contamination, rendering the food unsafe to eat. The Food Standards Agency has issued an urgent recall notice for jars of Patak’s Aubergine Pickle, at Waitrose and Sainsbury’s due to contamination fears. The affected batch, coded 3172, weighs 312g and has a best-before date of June 2026.

Shoppers who’ve snagged the tasty product are warned not to tuck in but to return it to their local store for a full refund, no receipt needed.

Patak’s, best known for its lush range of Indian cuisine including sauces, pastes, and snacks, is part of AB World Foods, which also boasts brands like Blue Dragon and Levi Roots among their most popular subsidiaries. Since the recall was issued, the company have confirmed that only one product line is affected and have apologised to customers for any inconvenience.

What are recall notices?

Recall notices are when products get pulled from shelves after going on sale due to safety concerns, or for not being up to scratch quality-wise. The Food Standards Agency is the organisation in charge of such recalls, and decides whether products gets “withdrawn” or “recalled”.

When a product is withdrawn, it is removed from the shelves, while a “recall” simply requests customers to return the item. Food products must be recalled if they are discovered to be contaminated with pathogens that could lead to food poisoning, or if plastic or metal has been detected in the product due to manufacturing errors.

Additionally, food items must also be recalled if any allergen information is missing or incorrect.
